Meet Squirrels Den Collectables
Our calendar sponsors play a vital role in helping the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust continue its vital work, providing education about and protecting one of the Island’s most loved native species.
We are delighted to introduce our July Calendar Sponsor, Squirrels Den Collectables, run by David and Michelle from their treasure trove of a shop at the top of Arreton Barns. If you’ve never wandered in before, you’re in for a treat!
Tell us a little about your business, what you do, where you’re based, and who you help
Squirrels Den Collectables is a hidden gem tucked away at the top of Arreton Barns. David and Michelle buy and sell a wonderful, eclectic mix of pre-loved collectable items including but not limited to: coins, books, jewellery, china, curios, glass sculptures, stained glass, tools, bottles, toys, pictures and so much more. Whatever you collect, there’s a good chance they’ll have something to catch your eye, or they’ll be very happy to give it a new home if you’re looking to sell.
Why did you choose to sponsor a month in our calendar?
David and Michelle are long time, vigorous and committed supporters of The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust, and with a shop named Squirrels Den Collectables, sponsoring the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust’s calendar felt like a natural fit!
What does supporting local wildlife or conservation mean to you or your business?
As owners of a small, independent Island business, David and Michelle feel it’s important to give something back to the place that supports them. The Isle of Wight’s wildlife and green spaces are part of what makes the Island such a special place to live and trade.
What is your favourite thing about red squirrels or the Island’s natural environment, and why?
There’s something wonderful about knowing these little characters are still darting about our woodlands here on the Island, when they’ve disappeared from so much of the mainland. It’s a real point of pride for Islanders like David and Michelle. Not only that but red squirrels also pay them the honour of visiting Squirrels Den Collectables on a daily basis to meticulously empty the feeders that Michelle and David keep brimming full of tasty hazelnuts for them, thus giving their official red squirrel seal of approval to ‘the den’.
Why do you feel it’s important to support local charities or community projects?
Small businesses and local charities go hand in hand, we’re all part of the same community, and supporting each other helps the whole Island thrive.
What’s coming up for your business in the year ahead?
Squirrel’s Den Collectables is always adding fresh stock to its shelves, so there’s never a bad time to pop in and see what treasures David and Michelle have found. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for the latest arrivals.
