Red Squirrel Awareness Week runs from 30 September to 6 October 2026, and here at the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust, we can’t wait to celebrate our favourite island residents with you.
This is one of the key opportunities each year, to shine a spotlight on the UK’s red squirrels, to share why they matter, what we’re doing to protect them here on the Wight, and how you can get involved. It really doesn’t matter whether you’re a long-time supporter or just discovering us for the first time, there’s something for everyone this year.
What’s Coming Up
We’ve got a packed week planned, and we’re not giving away all the details just yet… but here’s a sneak peek:
- Exciting visit opportunities at Howes Wood, if you are lucky some of our resident red squirrels might even come and take a look at you as you visit their natural habitat (NB: Howes Wood events must be booked in advance – sadly we cannot permit admissions without booking confirmation)
- Online fun, we look forward to sharing quizzes, competitions and squirrel-spotting activities you can join from anywhere
- And so much more, we’ve got plenty of surprises lined up throughout the week, so keep a close eye out for updates @iowredsquirreltrust
Why Awareness Week Matters
Red squirrels are one of Britain’s most treasured native species, and the Isle of Wight is one of their last strongholds in southern England. Awareness Week gives us the opportunity to reach new audiences, celebrate the conservation work happening on our doorstep, and remind everyone why protecting these habitats is so important.
